Witch House

It’s cool, underground and admittedly some of it is a bit pants but I’m listening to a lot of dark doomy tunes that have been pigeonholed into the “genre” Witch House. It’s a blend of Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle, that sort of thing with NIN and modern house as imagined by some demonic sprite brought up on the scares caused by Italian horror movies. Once again Warren Ellis shows me the way with music and he has a bunch of examples on his site http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=9743.
I found a mix tape on Sound Cloud that I thought was worth sharing.

Ace Frehley in Outer Space

Ace Frehley has finally released a track from his first album in godknowshowlong. The forthcoming album, Anomaly is due in September.

The track, Outer Space has a pretty hard edge, is rocking and fresh sounding (unlike some others we ain’t going to mention). You can get it from iTunes. For some reason they are making it hard for you, so if you have a link to the wrong iTunes store it doesn’t redirect. So, I have helpfully added the UK and US store links below.

Any other country and you are on your own I’m afraid.

KISS – MODERN DAY DELILAH

Back in the day I championed KISS. They were (in my view) nothing short of awesome. These days (in my view) they have become a KISS tribute band and I refer to them as the Tribute Band Formerly Known As Kiss ( or TBFKAK, – pronounced TBF cack – for short). Here sees them pulling out all of the stops and releasing a track to radio that sounds as if they raided some archive or other and all they could find was something that they would not have made one of their late 1980s efforts. The album cover is a reworking of their Rock N Roll Over sleeve (same artist apparently). In this age of reworking of old movies and zero originality I shouldn’t be surprised. I’m disappointed that a band that excited me so much as a child has become so boring.

Will I buy this? As there is no Walmart in the area probably not, I guess I’ll skip it.

New Radiohead song

Radiohead have released a new track free of charge courtesy of their DEAD AIR SPACE website. It is pretty much what you’d expect from Radiohead but it is free. I like free.

So here’s a new song, called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’.

We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished.
We’re pretty proud of it.

There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practicing, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it.

Apocalyptica: Worlds Collide – PopMatters Review

I’ve been finishing a lot of homework lately. This Apocalyptica album had been lying around for months. If I had written the review immediately after receipt it would have been a lot different. The album grew on me after a while. I was very disappointed when I first heard it. The resulting review was something that was somewhere between the two. I couldn’t make up my mind whether I loved it or was bored by it. What was certain was that I did not like it as much as their debut.

When Apocalyptica appeared on the music scene in 1996 with Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, they were busting the lid off a new can. Their unique blend of heavy metal and cellos was something really remarkable and daring. What was hard to fathom was their target audience. Those that liked classical music would have shunned the recording as sacrilege, and fans of Metallica were a little bemused. Their debut highlighted all of the similarities between classical music and the brand of metal made popular by Metallica. The idea was simple, unconventional, and brilliant. Just take four cellos and some classical arrangements of Metallica tunes, record them, and release to the general public.
