More Non News

It seems that the Guardian has written a story about the BBC scrapping plans to make a controversial drama about Tony Blair, George W. Bush and the lead up to the Iraq War. It looks like all of this scandalous behavior happened recently and something prompted the BBC to stop the whole sorry affair. Probably something to do with the upcoming election right? Well maybe, but on close inspection the story is about a drama that the BBC were developing 2 years ago. In fact it is not at all clear if the the BBC were only party involved. Apparently the “…BBC did pay some development funding towards it. For various creative reasons it was not taken any further.”

Slow news day much…

The BBC has dropped a potentially controversial TV drama it was developing about Tony Blair’s relationship with George Bush in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war, the Guardian has learned.

A draft script ordered by the BBC, seen by the Guardian, included a scene in which Blair and his director of communications, Alastair Campbell, urged the then chair of the joint intelligence committee, John Scarlett, to “sex up” the dossier on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction published in September 2002.

The drama took the name of, and was based on, The Accidental American – the 2004 book about Blair and Bush by BBC Radio 4 Today presenter James Naughtie. According to one source familiar with the project’s development, the revisiting of the “sexed up” dossier controversy – which led to the resignations of the BBC chairman and director general in early 2004 – was a factor in the drama not being commissioned. New Wicked Cool Press Release

The below is a new press release from Wicked Cool regarding the forthcoming album by The Contrast “God of Malfunction”.

Little Steven behind the board for energetic Brit-band The Contrast
Official Press release – February 25 2010:
The Contrast’s ‘God of Malfunction’ (Wicked Cool/ April 13): Twelve More of “The Coolest Songs in the World”
The Contrast “could be the first great 21st century power-pop band” (Houston Post, 4.10.08), and they offer further proof on ‘God of Malfunction,’ their 6th album and first for Little Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, out April 13.

Little Steven has been the energetic Brit-band’s champion since 2002, when he touted their track “Mystery #1″ as the “coolest song in the world’ on his “Underground Garage” radio show. In fact, during 2007, Steven put together a compilation of his favorite Contrast tracks for Wicked Cool and called it “Perfect Disguise – Introducing The Contrast.” Now, with Van Zandt as Executive Producer on a studio album for the first time, The Contrast were bolder, and ‘God of Malfunction’ delivers twelve of the best, jangly, guitar-driven, power pop gems of the band’s career.

Their spirit is perfectly captured by the album’s first single, “Coming Back to Life,” with its memorable chorus: “We are strange, getting stranger // We won’t change, we’ll screw the danger // Coming back to life.”

See a video clip of “Coming Back To Life” here:

The band’s distinctive Rickenbacker jangle and chime is back, along with other vintage guitar and keyboard sounds, enhanced this time by cello, theremin, mellotron, treated electric piano & Eno-esque ambient textures – “whatever it takes,” says Glasgow-born lead singer/songwriter/guitarist David Reid.

Says Little Steven: “This is The Contrast’s most creative and ambitious work to date.”
