    Exclamations!!!

I have a newly discovered phobia. Well, phobia is too strong (or wrong) a word. I think that it is an unreasonable hatred… of exclamation marks. Even that is not fine tuned enough. My problem is really with multiple exclamation marks!!!

Every time I see an email with one or more of these little buggers the hackles on the back of my neck go up and I want to scream.

In fact just one of them makes my skin crawl, but if someone repeats that key stroke then I’m nearly fit to burst. I just don’t get it. One exclamation mark does the job. It shows me that there is energy in the sentence and that I should give it more emphasis when reading. However, when someone responds to an email (and I get this a lot at work) with a “Thanks!!!” what in Odin’s beard am I supposed to do with that? Is this person really so animated with gratitude that they are dancing around the room in yellow dungarees like some demented kids TV show host?

It is up there with people SHOUTING IN EMAILS. I hate that too. Those people are all bastards.

Furthermore, (wow this is something of a rant now) I can’t abide messages that I get from people written in TXT-speak. I can barely understand those messages, is it really so much effort to write a whole word. What the fuck do you people have against vowels anyway?

I’ll go back in my box now. Clearly something has upset me. Cant imagine what.

    Thanks for listening!!!!!!!!!

New Doctor Who movie rumours surface, Johnny Depp linked – Den of Geek

I hate the very idea of a Doctor Who movie. I hate the idea of Johnny Depp camping it up in the TARDIS. I hate the idea of RTD writing a Doctor Who movie. I hate it when people make shit up in order to get more traffic to their website. In the name of all that is holy…

It’s little secret that Russell T Davies has moved to America, where he’s currently working on a fourth season of Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood. It’s also little secret that he’s expressed interest in writing and putting together a big screen adventure for Doctor Who.

However, a new story has surfaced – which we discovered via the fine folks at io9 – regarding possible details of a Doctor Who movie. And from where we’re sitting, there doesn’t look like much in the way of truth about it.

    Writing and stuff

A long time ago on a website that I started I claimed that I was going to attempt to write more with more purpose and style and… um… stuff. Of course, as always real life got in the way and I am too damn lazy to fight against the marauding hoards of real life.

Yep, that’s it I’m lazy. I was reading James Moran’s blog the other day (well this day in fact if you must know) and he pointed me to the rather wonderful http://phillbarron.wordpress.com/.  Never heard of Phill Barron, I guess he is a writer of some kind but he does hit several nails on the head with a very large hammer. In a very entertaining and sweary way.

Most often potential writers do not become fully fledged writing writers because they are a) mediocre or b) lazy or c) both. That was the edited highlights, he also emntioned something about whining and bitching and, oh go and read it yourself.

Writing, like any other profession is hard work. I have a day job, that is hard work… why would any other job that people pay you for be any easier. I mean that is why they pay you for work. If it were easy you would probably do it for free… and then starve.

So what does this mean for me? Nothing much I guess because I’m far too lazy to work at something for some potential pay-off that I might get at some point in some possible future. Perhaps I should rant and swear more in my blog posts? Or even posting somthing would be good. I guess there is always Twitter.  Although sometimes 140 characters can be a little difficult to fill…

    Gillian Anderson for Doctor Who?

    Gillian Anderson

    Gillian Anderson

The media are having a feeding frenzy again about who is cast opposite Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor. SFX have posted a story about a story that ran in the Telegraph. Are you keeping up with this? Apparently it pained them to post this rumour because they don’t normally do that sort of thing. Be that as it may, it sounds like someone somewhere may have seen one and one and made eleven or three. Both of which are sort of right depending on who you ask. Chinese whispers can be a dangerous thing. I’ll wait for a proper announcement from Mr Moffatt and Co.

Here is an excerpt from their article.

Normally we don’t bring these kind of stories to your attention, because the British press so often gets the wrong end of the stick (or in the case of some newspapers, make things up entirely). But we thought this story from The Telegraph was worth mentioning because a) it’s The Telegraph, not usually prone to reporting utter bobiins and b) because, to be honest, we want it be true: The X-Files’ Gillian Anderson to play The Rani opposite Matt Smith’s Doctor.

via SFX: the leading science fiction, fantasy and horror magazine.

The Rani? Why o why o why would anyone bring back that 2 dimensional piece of crap character. In the Telegraph article they mention first that there were going to be new monsters and villans, then in the next breath come out with this horse chestnut. If she was going to to be a companion… now  that would get my vote.

Kasterborous, also keeping up their usual standards of high quality journalism have also run the story peppered with the standard amount of daft comments and practically insulting remarks. This immediately caught my attention. My emphasis…

An appearance by one of the hottest women in sci-fi is another matter entirely of course, especially if this is only half a rumour, and Anderson is in fact lined up as the visibly mature companion to young-looking Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor.

Visibly mature! What is that supposed to mean? Gnash gnash snarl snarl. I used to really like that site but most times that I go there these days I come back with something else that pisses me off.

The original Telegraph article is here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/doctor-who/5204395/Gillian-Anderson-being-lined-up-for-Doctor-Who-appearance.html I’m off to put my head in the sand until it all goes away.

    Planet of the Dead Thoughts

The Doc and Christina hunt for the plot

Two things will be clear by this post a) I am something of a fan of Doctor Who b) this is a bit of a rant. Apologies that I haven’t edited it at all for content.

I have liked Doctor Who for a good number of years, since I was “knee-high to a grasshopper” in fact. In the history of the show there have been many high and low points but overall I have stuck with it because, in general, it is rollicking good TV. Since Russell T Davies (RTD) brought Doctor Who back in 2005 the show has become the yardstick by which all “family” entertainment is judged, such is the quality of the writing (mostly), production values (practically always), and the acting (without exception). There have been occasions where the show produces an episode that somehow misses the mark, leaving the viewer with a mild feeling of dissatisfaction that cannot quite be placed. “Planet of the Dead” was just such an episode.

Billed as an Easter special and slightly longer than a normal episode, “Planet of the Dead” is the beginning of the end for the Tenth Doctor (still played by the ever wonderful David Tennant) who will be regenerating at the end of the year after 3 more specials. The weight of the need to really pull something wonderful out of the bag is clearly heavy on RTD and so it should be as his tenure in the top spot will soon be up. Enough exposition already, you know all of this.

The main thing missing from this episode of Doctor Who was originality. This in itself is not strange Doctor Who has a long tradition of “borrowing” from Sci-Fi. During the original run there were many references and complete steals from Quatermass for example, there are more but I might digress again. “Planet of the Dead” was “Midnight” meets “Pitch Black” via “Tomb Raider” and yawn. I could go on, but I won’t.

Furthermore, and perhaps this is the crux of my dissatisfaction, with the exception of Christina (a good performance from Michelle Ryan) none of the characters had any meat to them. Not only did I not know anything about any of the guys on the bus, I’m not sure that I really cared what happened to them. Since the ressurection of Doctor Who I’m not sure that I can say that about any of the stories. The set up of folk on a bus put in danger was used brilliantly by RTD in “Midnight”, the small group of characters was exceptionally well defined and utilised. Not so here, the rest of the cast was left alone in the bus while The Doctor and Christina go off wandering around in the desert in search of I don’t now what. The giant fly people looked rubbish and served no purpose other than to add a few laughs. I never felt that anyone was in any danger at all.

Actually, that is it! Simply and in one sentence, there was no sense of danger. That is completely what was missing. Where “Midnight” had a sense of danger and claustrophobia, “Planet of the Dead” had neither. When the oncoming swarm got to the flying bus (if you haven’t seen the episode yet, well you’ll see) it just sort of hovered there for a while before setting off as if they weren’t that bothered about the manta ray aliens either. Were the boys at the back of the bus mooning them before they pushed through the wormhole? Perhaps it was the sight of those bare bottoms that meant only 4 manta ray aliens (MRA) followed them through the wormhole. Even once the MRA got to earth  they were not even a bit of threat. Rather than going off to devour the planet like you’d expect they circled around waiting to be shot by UNIT (who appear to have had some shooting lessons since the 1970s by the way).

POTD has been described as a romp (mostly by RTD). That it was, it was a pointless, frolicking gambol of an episode that, while fun, left one feeling that something was missing. One vital Doctor Who ingredient, danger.

However, the trailer for the November episode (do we really have to wait that long?) looks fantastic. According to RTD things are about to get very difficult for the Doctor as he reaches the end of his tenth regeneration. I can’t wait.

You make good points, but I kind of liked that nothing happened with the people on the bus. There are always a whole slew of character in the Who universe who are just there to fill time. Midnight was an exception because they existed to show humanity betray the Doctor. They really had no inner life of their own. These characters existed more as someone for the Doctor to save. I thought they worked in this context.

If it were up to me I would have given them more to do and not bothered with the thief character, but I guess they wanted lots of publicity about hiring Michelle Ryan.

Sometimes I want to get RTD, and force him to look at his plots and say: “don’t you think they look tired?”

POTD was a fairly pedestrian outing for our favourite Timelord, and that I think was its redeeming defect. It was small scale and the better for it. Almost, an aside for the Doctor. The human race wan’t really at risk and we didn’t have daleks, or cybermen or the Master. Nice little romp.

I also think it’s worth mentioning Lee Evans in despatches. He was really rather good. Funny. And the children loved it.

        @Dan
You’re quite right, Lee Evans was really entertaining. I would have liked to have seen more of him. Perhaps we will in the future.

As for the scale. They have shown (in things like Midnight) that they can downscale really effectively. I felt like this was a but of a rerun that didn’t quite work out. It was effectively a Troughtonesque base under siege adventure but there was no siege or threat. It was OK, but I will file it under dalliance. As there is so little “Who” this year I had hoped for more.

    Ice Warriors… yeah right.

Kasterborous a usually entertaining Doctor Who related website is reporting a story on the Doctor who special that is currently being filmed. Apparently Peter O’Brien is filming scenes for the episode.

However, I’m disappointed to report that not only are they very quick to disrespect another fan site they are very keen to be convince us, based on purely circumstantial evidence, that a fan favourite alien is returning to the series. They say…

Referring to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Den of Geek (whose hit rate took a tumble recently when they paid too much attention to Twitter) explain that O’Brien is playing a villain in a story set on Mars.

Surely any Doctor Who story set on Mars can only feature the return of The Ice Warriors?

Yep, that’s right the only Doctor Who villains that came from Mars were the Ice Warriors. They seem to be forgetting that there was also that small altercation in the Pyramids of Mars. The planet has in fact had numerous mentions in the show, probably because it is the nearest planet to Earth. Proximity might also explain why the planet Mars seems to feature so strongly in Science Fiction in general. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to see those scaly fellas back but let’s not jump to any conclusions too quickly.

    Spoilers (part deux)

So now the Doctor Who specials have been filming for a few weeks and because I have a damn Internet connection I have been sucked into the Spoiler Zone yet again. Why can’t I just not look? Why do I have to search for these bits of information? As I said here I would enjoy the whole experience much more if I knew nothing. Still, I can’t seem to help myself. It is like poking at that scab that never heals. I know that if I leave it alone I’ll get better but there is something compelling about its crusty exterior that I can’t resist. Ahem…

It makes me want to share the stuff that I have found too, but that is also bad because I make the circle of pain that much wider. Then other people discover things that they don’t want to know and that makes them unhappy. That said, this site never recived so many hits as when I published that photo of Davros. That should be no excuse. Aaargh dammit, you twisted my arm, if you want to know then read further… (More …)

    Ranting, (W)riting and Reaction

After too long I turned my hand to writing a review the other night. If you are following me on Twitter then you will have seen that I mentioned that it turned in to something of a rant. I’m not sure what forced me to vent my spleen on this particular record (it will remain nameless for the time being) but even though the resultant rant was, well… ranty, it was entertaining.

It reminded me of something that I said a while ago that writing bad reviews (and by that I mean giving something a bad review rather than writing the review badly) was pretty easy; turning a review into something that was even-handed is hard. It is not big or clever to tear into someones art due to laziness. Someone has sweat blood and tears over it. In the case of Axl Rose, someone has spent a large portion of their life working on it. That said, slagging the crap out of the record in question was pretty cathartic. It is not finished yet but here is an excerpt:

The band has taken a template forged in the sixties and slavishly recreated it with little imagination. Guitars swirl, distort, and of course reverse. Vocals sound like a very pissed Phil Spector recorded them from the other end of an exceptionally long tunnel. There is even the conceit that there are two sides to the record like the compact disc that the recording is burned onto was never invented. There are not two sides. In reality, there is barely one song.

…and so it goes on. I asked on Twitter whether ranting was still considered writing, one of my friends responded with the helpful advice:

No. Ranting is vitriolic unfiltered garbage that emerges from the deep dark cesspit inside you.

Writing is self-indulgent edited garbage that emerges from the creative side of your brain.

I didn’t get around to thanking him. I think he was trying to help and he has a point. Self-indulgent edited garbage that emerges from the creative side of your brain cuts both ways. All art to a greater or lesser extent is garbage. Someone, somewhere will hate it with such passion that you will wonder why you bothered. The artist presumably bothers because s/he wanted to provoke an emotional response from someone, anyone. In that event then vitriol should also be an acceptable reaction. People like the above, nameless band or Axl Rose or Tracey Emin or anyone that puts something out into the public domain sets themselves up for such criticism. Furthermore, I argue that they do it on purpose. They open themselves up for attack from without, from people like me. Moreover, by writing reviews, ranty or otherwise I open myself up for similar attack. I guess we all just want to have our opinions heard and even recognition that someone can’t stand what you did might be recognition enough. I guess what my less than scholarly deductions are pointing to is the conclusion that tearing into a peice of art is fine because the creator would want that. Thus, giving me carte blanche to be mean in print to some poor deluded fool (or fools) who thought that they had produced a good record.

Or I could be looking for an excuse to write more rants …because it was fun.
